# Is LinkedIn Useful in Japan? What the Numbers Say

[Nobu Sato](https://nobusato.jp/en/profile?hsLang=en)

![Bar chart comparing LinkedIn, Bizreach, Wantedly and Eight registered users in Japan](https://nobusato.jp/hs-fs/hubfs/is-linkedin-useful-in-japan-en.png?width=1200&height=630&name=is-linkedin-useful-in-japan-en.png)

LinkedIn in Japan is small, but it is dense in exactly the places most foreign professionals want to work. If you are aiming at foreign companies, tech or bilingual roles, the recruiters you want are on it. If you are aiming at a traditional Japanese firm, they mostly are not.

I get asked about this a lot by people who just moved here. Their feed at home was full of job news. In Tokyo it feels quieter, and they wonder whether their profile is doing anything. Here is what the numbers say, and what I have seen from the hiring side.

## How many people in Japan are on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn's last official Japan figure I could find is "more than 3 million registered members," announced in August 2022 ([Impress Watch, 22 August 2022](https://www.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/1433636.html)). In January 2024 the company's Japan head told [Business Insider Japan](https://www.businessinsider.jp/article/281034/) it expected to reach 4 million that year. That was a forecast. As of October 2026 I found no newer official count for Japan.

Now put that next to the workforce. Japan's labor force averaged 70.15 million people in 2025, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' [Labour Force Survey](https://www.stat.go.jp/data/roudou/sokuhou/nen/dt/index.html) (detailed tabulation, published 13 February 2026). The 2022 figure of three million is just over 4% of that. And registered members include plenty of accounts nobody has opened in years.

That looks like a niche. But LinkedIn isn't unusually small by local standards. Japan's own career and business platforms all sit in the same band.

Japan users as published by each company (millions) LinkedIn (official, Aug 2022) 3.0+ Bizreach (end Jan 2026) 3.29+ Wantedly (FY to Aug 2025) 4.32 Eight (Jul 2026) 4.5 LinkedIn ad-reach estimate ~6.2 For scale: labor force 70.15 million (MIC, 2025 average), about 15 times the Eight bar. Definitions differ and overlap is unknown. Do not read this as a ranking.

**Fig.1**On figures each company published between 2022 and 2026, LinkedIn's official Japan member count sits in the same 3 to 4.5 million band as Bizreach, Wantedly and Eight, each roughly 4 to 6% of Japan's labor force.

Bizreach, the main paid platform for mid-career hires in Japan, had more than 3.29 million scout-eligible members at the end of January 2026 ([Visional semi-annual report, March 2026](https://www.visional.inc/ja/ir/ir_news/auto_20260317160000_S100XQQJ/pdfFile.pdf)). Wantedly reported 4.32 million registered users ([FY to August 2025 results presentation](https://www2.jpx.co.jp/disc/39910/140120251010571512.pdf)). Eight, a business-card app that doubles as a professional network, passed 4.5 million users in July 2026 ([Sansan press release, 31 July 2026](https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000860.000049627.html)).

So the Japanese market is fragmented. No single platform covers most of the workforce. What differs is who is on each one.

## Who is actually on it

This part is observation, not statistics. On the hiring side, the people I find on LinkedIn in Japan are mostly in foreign companies, IT and SaaS, consulting, and bilingual specialist roles. The people searching for them are in-house recruiters at foreign firms and agency consultants who place English-speaking candidates.

Employees of large Japanese companies, manufacturers and regional firms are thinner. Many have an account that was last touched years ago. Japanese firms tend to hire mid-career people through Bizreach and agencies, rarely through LinkedIn.

If you think about where you sit on a talent map, this gets simpler. I wrote about [which circle of the talent map you are in](https://nobusato.jp/en/blog/which-circle-of-the-talent-map-you-are-in?hsLang=en). If your same-field and adjacent circles are foreign companies and global roles, LinkedIn is where hiring teams will look for you. If your target is a domestic Japanese company, put your energy into the local channels first.

## Make your profile findable in two languages

Recruiters search by job title and domain keywords. For a role in Japan, they usually search in both Japanese and English. One person types "Accounting Manager." Another types 経理マネージャー. If your profile only exists in English, you are invisible to the second search.

LinkedIn lets you add a second profile in another language. Use it. Keep English as your main profile and add a Japanese one, even a short one. If your Japanese is limited, get a native speaker to check the job titles. Titles matter more than prose here.

Write your headline as role plus domain. "Product Manager | Payments, B2B SaaS" gets found and is understood in one line. "Passionate problem solver" does neither. Your employer is already in the experience section, so the headline doesn't need it.

## Be careful with Open to Work

Open to Work can be shown to everyone or only to recruiters using LinkedIn Recruiter. According to [a Coursera guide](https://www.coursera.org/articles/how-to-let-recruiters-know-youre-open-on-linkedin), even the recruiters-only setting comes with no guarantee from LinkedIn that recruiters at your own company won't see it. LinkedIn changes these settings from time to time, so check its Help pages for the current wording before you rely on it.

In Japan I would treat that warning seriously. Industries here are small. The agency consultant who sees your green banner may also know your manager. I never do informal backchannel checks on candidates for this exact reason: it can leak someone's job search. If you are still employed, use the recruiters-only setting, or skip it and let a clean headline do the work.

A caveat on the user numbers earlier in this post: each one is self-reported by a platform, and they count different things. Bizreach counts scout-eligible members, free tier included. Eight counts users who registered their own card. LinkedIn's figure is from 2022. None of them publish overlap or how many people log in monthly.

A third-party tracker, [NapoleonCat](https://napoleoncat.com/stats/linkedin-users-in-japan/), estimates about 6.2 million LinkedIn users in Japan as of September 2026, based on ad-platform data. That is a reach estimate, not a member count. I would only trust the direction: it is growing.

The job-change rate matters too. [Japan's job change rate](https://nobusato.jp/en/blog/japan-job-change-rate?hsLang=en) is low, so in any given year only a minority of people are moving. In a slow market, being findable in the one place your target employers look may be worth more, not less. I'm not fully sure about that, but it matches what I see.

You don't need to post every day. Picture the hiring manager you want to meet in three years searching for your role tomorrow, in English or Japanese. Would you show up?
